Lunaria or Money Plant

May 8, 2008

Lunaria or Honesty. My mom calls them Silver Dollar plants as well.

Gardening can become an expensive habit, so I've been trying to move things around the yard that already exist and give them a place where they can really shine. On the left side of our deck is mostly shade and I've been lost as to what to plant there. I remembered that my mom pointed out how lucky it was that we had money plants growing in the house we moved into. They are low-maintenance biennials that also thrive in shade, so I went to the back of the yard and relocated them to the left side of our deck. They are perfect because they are tall and bushy and really "fills in the gaps" in the garden without having to wait years or spend loads of money. They are often mistaken for a weed and I was never quite fond of them before, but they remind me of my mom. They also produce purple flowers which is my mom's favorite color.
