"Like to have"

February 28, 2010

I saw this "like to have" on Amazon's wish lists. It's a great way of saying, it's not a priority, but I would really appreciate it if I had this. That's how I feel about most of our home projects. There's always something getting in the way of the things I would like to have. There's always seems to be something we NEED to do that takes precedence. So I divided our to-do list in two:

To-Do List:
  • New fridge $$$
  • Half bathroom door $$$
  • French drain in back and front of house $$
  • Gutter guards (been on the list for 2 years now) $$
  • New front door $$$ - I hate our front door. There's a large window in it. Who thought that was a good idea?
  • New BBQ grill
  • Pave a driveway $$$$
  • Replace some windows
  • New dryer
Like to Have List:
  • New kitchen counter top $$$$
  • Decorate the living room - new sofa sectional, 2 club chairs, console table, coffee table, and new rug. $$$$
  • Tile the upstairs bathroom floor and around bath tub. $$$
  • Replace bath tub. $$$
  • Repaint/Replace bathroom vanity, mirror and shelf. $$-$$$
  • Replace bathroom lighting. $$
  • Build master closet for bedroom. $$$
  • Finish the basement $$$$
  • Replace the dining room & living room floor together $$$$
What are some things you wish you would "like to have"?

Good list! Plus then you get the satisfaction of crossing things off as you accomplish/purchase them :-)

Since we're still renting, my list is more "stuff". There are so many little things that we've just never bought, and there's no good reason - just haven't done it. Things like a decent teakettle (for how much I use mine, it's sorta ridiculous that we're using a hand-burning $10 dealie!), a covered trash can, nightstands (of course, I'm a bit picky about these - and I'm waiting for the perfect 'fixer uppers' to appear at a local flea market :-)), a smaller cast-iron skillet, new throw pillows for the couch, etc.

Of course, there are a few bigger items, too. Our dining set was borrowed from my in-laws' basement and it's 80's at their worst. And all our china is still living in boxes, but I think both of those furniture items will be from a fixer-upper source as well (I LOVE refinishing furniture :-)).

BTW, I thought I used to be able to comment with my Wordpress account? Now it's making me use my Google account, which I think links to my style blog, not my everyday blog...

Have you thought about using secondhand building supplies, like they have at Habitat for Humanity Re-Stores? Saves a bit of $$$ to help expand the "can do" list.

We've only been there once (our renovations aren't NEARLY as far along as yours are!), and like any secondhand source it's hit-or-miss, but I was amazed how nice some of these "secondhand" pieces are. Apparently not everyone holds on to 1970s appliances (etc.) like we do -- some people renovate every couple of years.

And p.s. on the appliance front, our own 1970s stove and broken dishwasher are out the door on Thursday. (Thanks to our other homeowner bargain source, a local appliance chain's "scratch & dent" store.) Yay!!
